Tuesday’s Tidings

Fiction vs. Non-fiction

Oprah is all bent out of shape because a book that she had recommended as a work of Non-fiction turned out to have some fabricated parts. Instead of just saying to her audience, “This book should really be categorized as work of Fiction because there are some un-truths in it, but it is still a good book and a good read.” She, however, took these lies as a direct attack on her veracity and invited the author on her show for an hour of grilling. I still haven’t heard if the book is worthwhile reading, whether it is Fiction or Non-fiction. Is the book any better or worse because it is not 100% truthful?

Is the Bible listed under Fiction or Non-fiction?

My ex-father-in-law was a Pulitzer Prize winning author of Biographies, a Non-fiction category and I have read most of his books. In a word, they are boring, but extremely accurate. At the same time Irving Stone was writing Biographical Novels, definitely Fiction, yet much more readable and much more successful in sales and movies yet they were probably researched as much as the real Biographies. Is the book that Oprah recommended a good Non-fiction book and a bad Fiction book?

Is the Bible listed under Fiction or Non-fiction?

The guy that wrote the book was not writing for a newspaper or writing a news story and yet in recent times we have been exposed to Fiction creeping into the pages of newspapers posing as Non-fiction or “news”. Why all the hue-&-cry from Oprah? Get on with all the lying going on around us outside of the Oprah-book-club world.

On the other hand I guess the hour-long “You lied to me!!!” made for good Television.

Monday Musings

memories of
john lennon
edited and introduced by
Yoko Ono
I just finished this book of snippets of John Lennon memories by a group of people, some of them well known, who both knew or never met John, but had something to say about John that yoko thought worth publishing.

I laughed and cried and laughed and cried my way through the book and I'm left with certain impressions:

  • I was as impressed with the submissions, which were in alphabetical order, as I was with the omissions. I believe that there were some submissions that made the book because they had nice things to say about Yoko and some were from someone like you or me that never met John but were influenced by him. I was surprised that there was nothing from any of the Beatles in the book.
  • The book was published on the 25th anniversary of John's murder, which brought out an interesting sidelight. 8 December 1980 was also remembered by my favorite radio station, KINK, with an entire day dedicated to John Lennon and Beatles music, yet the prior day, 7 December, "A day that will live in infamy", was not mentioned as having taken place 64 years ago. I guess it would have been ludicrous to play Japanese music on the 7th.

Friday's Frys

To be 70 years young is sometimes far more cheerful and hopeful than to be 40 years old.

A possible new state motto for Oregon could be:

"We cover the alphabet from H2O."

Thursday's Thought

...and OK I started this Blog but is there anyone out there reading? I feel like the tree in the woods that fell when no one was around. I'll try to keep adding "stuff" daily, or whenever I find time.

Here are today's lyrics, enjoy!

Hank Snow Lyrics - Ninety Miles An Hour (Down A Dead End Street)

I took you home from a party
and we kissed in fun,
a few stolen kisses and no harm was done.
Instead of stopping when we could,
we went right on,
until suddenly we found the brakes were gone.

You belong to someone else and I do too.
It's just too crazy being here with you.
As a bad motorcycle with the devil in the seat,
Doin' 90 miles an hour down a dead end street.

I didn't want to want to now I have no choice.
It's too late to hear the warning voice.
All I hear is thunder as our two hearts beat,
Doin' 90 miles an hour down a dead end street.

You're not free to belong to me
and you know I can never be your own.
Your lips on mine are like sweet sweet wine,
but we're headed for a wall of stone.

Warning signs are flying by us but we pay no heed,
Instead of slowing down the pace we keep pickin' up the speed.
Disaster's getting closer every time we meet.
Doin' 90 miles an hour down a dead end street.

Wednesday's Walrus

"The time has come," the Walrus said,"To talk of many things:Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--Of cabbages--and kings--And why the sea is boiling hot--And whether pigs have wings."

Imagine by John L.

Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people living for today...
Imagine there's no countries,
It isn't hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people living life in peace...
Imagine no possesions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.

About Cadmaven

Personal
I’m an opinionated, white, heterosexual, bleeding-heart-liberal, septuagenarian atheist. The last time I was required to wear a nametag they didn’t have enough nametag material to spell out “Recalcitrant Malcontent” so I never had to wear the nametag.

Why a Blog?
Why not? After writing letters to relieve my pent-up frustrations and never getting a response and never knowing if they were read, my daughter convinced me that the Blog was what I needed to do with my “bon mots”.

Rules of the Road
I will talk about anything although my favorites might be fast cars, movies and great song lyrics. I would prefer not to receive pornography, whatever your definition might be, although I would gladly discuss it. I have zero tolerance for abuse of children or women.
